The Snowman is a 1982 British animated television film and symphonic poem based on Raymond Briggs's 1978 picture book The Snowman. Of course, Modern Wild Mouse rides, of which Coaster Rider certainly is, built in 2013, are far safer than the old wooden, and we are not even sure if our childhood suspicions of the danger were true, but they still feel inherently unsafe and that’s all part of the charm.Ĭoast Rider is a Typical Wil Mouse with a long ride to the top and a fun drop and then a long windy route to the bottom through a series of fun switchbacks. ![]() The way the ride cars operate really adds credence to these myths as the cars fling their way down the track. This adds real jeopardy to the proceedings and makes any Wild Mouse ride quite thrilling. We love Wild Mouse Coasters and have always grown up with the tales of how these rides are the most dangerous and how cars can fly off the tracks at any given moment. Queues are often short and the ride is well worth a look, as we say, it doesn’t look great but it’s a lot of fun. Because it’s launched there are no lift hills or drops, but the track is built into the side of a hill so the track runs pretty high up in the air. The Track itself is pretty short but quite fun, the 38mph launch feels much faster than the low top speed suggests. It’s actually really secure as a strange robotic bondage-esque restraint system raises up trapping your feet, and presses against your back, but it feels pretty open and exposed greatly increasing the thrill and fun of the ride. Here you sit astride a model horse a bit like a Carousel, but instead of gently bobbing up and down, you are launched at 39mph around a coaster track, so it feels pretty exposed and extreme. Part of the thrill comes from the ride vehicle. Pony Express is pretty unimposing and looks a pretty tame horsey ride, but we were really surprised by how fun a ride on the horses really was. It has been fully restored and looks really good…it’s actually a really fun little dark ride and an incredible piece of history. Inside the mine, you will find colorful displays of the Mining environment, detailed animatronic characters toiling away in the dark, and beautiful natural cave formations. The idea is simple, jump in a Mine Train and take a tour of the inside of a mountain Mine. The Disney Dark Ride is an Icon of the industry and it all started on this unassuming little train track. Walt Disney made no secret of watching Bud’s new idea and then ripping it off in his own parks. ![]() What we have here, is the FIRST Dark Ride! In just about every theme park around the world Dark Rides are now a mainstay of the amusement park industry, and this is where it all started. This is one of the most revolutionary rides in existence! It’s just the revolution has already happened, and this ride is now basically a Museum Piece. ![]() However, you would be wrong, at least on the revolutionary part. We know this is hardly the most extreme ride in the park, You may think it’s slow, fairly dull, and not exactly revolutionary. It has gotten to the point where a lot of the more obvious themes have been chosen by now. We have been naming the reindeer after a theme since 1971. Previous themes, prior to 2005, yielded some great names. Hamish in 2019 – still a big strong reindeer and character in our herd. This led to him being bottle-fed by the herders for the first part of his life so that he could grow into a big, strong Scottish reindeer and as such was given a big, strong Scottish name…Hamish. Hamish was born in 2010 and unfortunately wasn’t being fed by his mother. Hamish is a final example of being an exception to the naming rule. He was supposed to be called Meccano to fit in with the 2011 naming theme of Games & pastimes, but that name never stuck due to him looking incredibly alike a Svalbard reindeer (small and dumpy). Holy Moley, our television superstar, had such an eventful initial few days to her life that one herder exclaimed ‘holy moley!’ after being informed of events (she fell down a hole in a boulder field). Occasionally we will get reindeer where a nickname from early on in their life appears to stick and stay with the reindeer. It is not just ‘the Swedes’ that have names that don’t fit into a theme. He was named by Fiona, just because she likes the name! Bovril (photo from 2020) was used as a breeding bull here on Cairngorm for several years after being imported from Sweden in 2011. Spike, Caesar, Houdini, Bovril, and Hook are some examples of these boys’ names, and they have a range of numbers and colours in their ear tags. These older boys were named individually and not within a theme. It is worth noting that we also have just under 10 male reindeer still with us that were born in Sweden between the years of 20 and brought to Scotland to provide new genetics for our herd. ![]() Juniper (2020) showing off her grey ear-tag. It is a legal requirement to have a tag on any animal that is transported within the U.K., so we’ve made it work for us with specific colours and numbers that help us identify the reindeer if required. Well, each reindeer also has a number on their tag and this number corresponds to the reindeer name on our systems. For example, if you see an orange tag, you may not know if this reindeer was born in 2008 or 2017. Although, as you can see, some colours are repeated which can cause confusion. ![]() Now, when you visit again you may have a better idea of how old the reindeer you are feeding may be. So, there you have it, that is a list of the naming themes (with the corresponding tag colour and some examples of reindeer names) that are currently in circulation with our reindeer. ![]() ![]() It can be any of millions of colors, but it is only one single dot that makes up an image. So here goes…Ī pixel is the smallest unit of display on a screen. That’s pretty important when we’re talking about resizing and the canvas size. I recently saw a site with that exact scenario, and the savings were 91% with a resized image. In real life, there is some overhead to the resizing process, so we might not save exactly 93% by resizing. Instead, we sent them a 300 x 300 image, which has 90,000 pixels! Some basic math tells us that we wasted nearly 93% of the pixels in that image. The browser wanted an 80 x 80 image, which is 6,400 pixels. Alas, images are two dimensional constructs, so we have to think in 2D. However, what if you exported the images out of Photoshop at 300 x 300 pixels? The browser will downsize those images to fit in the display space, resulting in a lot of wasted pixels.Ī glance at the numbers might indicate that we have an image a little over 3x larger than it ought to be. Let’s say that you have some images displayed on your page at 80 pixels wide by 80 pixels high. The screen size of the visitor’s device affects this also, but let’s look at a basic example. ![]() The root of the problem is that we have images in our page that are larger than the space where we are displaying them. Before we jump into those, lets learn a bit more about what resizing and scaling means. Plus, some plugins for WordPress can help solve the resizing problem. You may be thinking, “Didn’t I already optimize my images? Why do they need resizing?”įortunately, WordPress has some built-in image resizing tricks. If so, it can be a daunting problem to solve. If you’ve ever run a speed test with, , or PageSpeed Insights, you may have seen a warning about resizing or scaling your images. |
